As I sit here at the steps of a closed Concord waiting for the boy to reach the intended destination, while my friends went off to see the fireworks at the Esplanade, I can't help but go into a mental overdrive during this last half hour of 2011.

New Years is a small thing to some people, like how Birthdays are as well. It is indeed all relative. Relativity, a valuable lesson Abs always drilled into me. Yet I persist to impart my beliefs that the month of December is important, for me my birthday, for Christmas gatherings regardless of religion, and for New Year's day bringing hope to the next 365 days while celebrating the last 365 days.

What if New Years is just New Years? It is not important to the other and it is another day. A busy, hectic day. If we do not pass the midnight hour together, it really does not matter. But I persist in my own beliefs, and I maintain that it must be done if effort allows.

So I came to a deduction, relative to yourself is very important. If you do not persist on your however idealistic ways, how can you be you. You are not what other people think is frivolous, you are what you feel is important to you.

And it may not be best to forcefully demand the same ideals, lest you are grooming suicide bombers.

Just follow your gut. Thank yourself for being you.

The Melancholy Pineapple of Death

December has always been the month I look forward to. Mainly due to the fact that it's birthday, Christmas, and New Year's season. On top of which it is rainy and windy, like autumn and winter. I like rainy and windy. I used to love rainy and windy.

As one gets older, and that is the only reason why I can fathom 'love' turning into 'like', this dreary weather chills your bones and dampens your mood. When you're young, you be a rebel. Such winter clouds are the perfect background music to trudging in the rain under trench coats and spiked boots. When you're older, it's work rain play rain home rain. Sleep rain is good, but getting up in the morning rain and wanting to remain under the blanket rain and call to take MC on Friday and Monday rain will not exactly make James Dean proud.

I liked the cold overseas, and I think I liked it because it was overseas. Locally, one is constantly reminded that you're not on holiday. Buses horning, trains breaking down, fees bills installments to pay. On top of which people who you want calling aren't calling, and people who you don't want calling are. Today, the cold made me stay in bed for 14 hours straight simply because I had no motivation to get up. Yes, I just laid there. And yes, the weather made me do it. And for myself, once that bear trap of no motivation snaps, even sex or deadlines won't get me going. It's rather dangerous, this melancholy pineapple of death.

But no, this melancholy pineapple of death doesn't happen so often. Today is just one of those days where everything goes wrong. I went to the wrong venue. My umbrella broke. Calls keep coming in. The fish soup came with milk. The pineapple of death pissed on ya.

I have so many wishes in my head.
I wish I didn't get such a curt reply.
I wish I don't need to look for alternatives.
I wish I knew what to do.
I wish I don't need to worry.
I wish I don't have to compare.
I wish for a football team of Abercombie and Fitch boys.

Then you realise in the slums of Delhi there are young children eating decomposing rubbish for sustenance. In Orchard alone there were a group of volunteers bringing out paraplegic wheelchair bound kids to see the Christmas lights. So I stopped my selfishness and started wishing for world peace. For everyone to do a little part in lightening another's misery. For a smile on a dying woman's face.

In December, it is also a time of death. Statistically, there are more cases of folks passing on during this season. My friends shared the same sentiment too as, like in my area, there seem to be a funeral a day under their blocks. I guess this is nature's balancing act, Santa Claus and Grim Reaper making the unlikeliest best mates.

I wouldn't mind dieing in December, since I was born in December. Tis a good season.

For tonight, let my Zinger burger and curly fries make me happy.

Are we merely sheep to slaughter? Blood drained, meat skinned, bone stewed, hung to dry? Over dramatic, aren't I, on a simple issue of taxi fare increases. Comparing the flag down rates in Asia, it's not all that bad, especially since there are lesser occurrences of drivers giving you a tour of Singapore when you want to go from the airport to Pasir Ris.

Hong Kong starts at SGD3.34
Tokyo starts at SGD11.89
Dubai has a minimum fair of SGD3.53

Each country has their own surcharges, Hong Kong for example has one for putting items in the trunk. The cost of going to the Nusa Dua from Denpasar airport in Bali is around $20-$30, about the same from Changi airport to Choa Chu Kang. Unless you hit the midnight surcharge which could cost about $40. We're not the most expensive, but we're not cheap either. So why the angst?

I doubt the admin clerk commuting between home and office would bother if modeling agencies price fix, yet it is good to know that industries are being watched. But everyone from the bar chor mee uncle to the housing agent ah beng will be affected if you fix prices on an already monopolized private transportation that is more public then unessential.

Peak periods and rain sees no taxis in sight, calling for one only gets you elevator music, and half of the cab uncles do not know where Emerald Hill is. Do not even bother asking them to look up the street directory or google maps, they will simply take the job first and drive blindly in the hopes that you do the directing as the meter ticks.

How can a government blatantly slap fines and lawsuits controlling private companies and have the cheek to decide such a drastic, drastic, let me repeat it a third time, drastic increase in surcharges, flag down rates and peak periods? What do we do for alternatives? The trains are over crowded, the crazy bus drivers get a kick out of jamming breaks, and the roads are very bicycle unfriendly.

Riot !n Magenta in Bali

The boy secured himself a gig in Bali just half a year after the conception of his band. A last minute deal, we scrambled for tickets within a span of one week. The Indonesian organisors found them through the Baybeats lineup on YouTube, and it helped that he did the remix for Protocol Afro (those buggers are the bomb). Lodging and flight, sponsored. A driver was also provided where we could travel between towns and beaches, but it was mainly for shuttling between the hotel and the huge festival ground.

To say that we enjoyed the whole experience was a severe understatement. For a newbie groupie like me, I am immensely proud of him and felt delighted at the opportunity. It came with the price of making coffee for him, amongst other things.

And for everyone else who kept asking me what they play, I don't really know how to describe electronic pop without making it sound like some ah beng diu diu diu cheeky girls shit. Which it is not. So, here, watch the video instead:

The Indon crowd were very welcoming and supportive, and the closest I can describe it is to being in a huge kampong where everyone greets you with a hug in their hearts. See? There is hope for local bands, just put in the time and harness the talent.

Thus far, this was the best trip I ever made in my whole entire life. Probably because we had a driver to bring us around everywhere. Alright, it was also the fun in meeting everybody, bands and organizers, and my Indon friend (the dashing GRO I met in Club Med) who brought me around on the first day.

Gotta love Bali.

The Relationship Issue: Stop Pointing Fingers At Singaporean Women

How objective can a post shedding light on Singapore women be if it's written by a Singaporean woman? That depends on how objective the reader is.

There had been articles and views expressing how local women are the female embodiment of Wall Street greed. Money grubbing and obnoxious, we eat babies, not make them. But how many more articles must there be before you really turn a sweet Singaporean girl (armed with a degree as is the minimum requirement in our capitalist country, holds a job so that she can contribute to the family, will continue working with her Singaporean husband to help support their own family in the future, and would probably name her son Jaden) into Cleopatra with claws hankering after ang moh Anthony and giving birth to albino looking babies (assuming it's a Chinese girl) called Joe?

Obviously I'm not talking about myself. I'm not sweet. And I will not name my son Jaden.

Neither do I have a preference for Caucasians. I tried, believe me, but I'm more comfortable with local men. After all, I grew up with them.

Back to the topic, why are local girls deemed as magnets to money, swinging around their Mulberry with their matching Ferragamos? Because if we don't carry our Armani, what are we going to do with it after we buy it?

- The perception most men have of women with their own spending power on credit is the fear that they have to buy luxury goods for them in the future. I would like to argue this point, it is a very wrong rationale. If you are willing to spend $50, $100, $500, $1000 garland on a strutting singing Thai girl and still get no sex, you can afford to save up so that you can buy your future wife a $2000 bag just once for her birthday. If she expects it from you every other month, then you're either fucking someone else and she knows it or yes, she's a money grubber.

- The other possibility is the woman has shit loads of cash money. Do you earn as much as her? If you don't, then you and the whole regular part of the world would be intimidated by her. Rightfully so, because she worked to where she is, she reserves the right to find a man who is equally intellectual, hardworking, intriguing, shrewd, rich etc. Unless she wants to do a Donatella Versace and support toy boys, which is also entirely alright.

- Is she a rich man's daughter? Then you must ask if you're a rich man's son. If you are not, social statuses will come into play and you better hope you hooked a poor little rich girl rebelling against the atrocities of class segmentation.

Then there's that SMU study proving that Singaporean girls are materialistic.

- I read the entire research paper, it is not an accurate study. For one, you're surveying the brain of someone barely an adult. Secondly, it's a mix of local and foreign students, of which the results did not state their nationality. Lastly, the study was somewhat akin to a trial run for future similar studies, so that the future experiments know these loose ends and can tighten them. In other words, based on that study you're better off saying Indon girls like their Chanels.

Singaporean girls have such bland personalities, they only talk about bags and bitches.

- Singaporean men only talk about Man U and health spas. Stereotype much? In reality, there are many types of women from many walks of life. From the elitist daddy's girls who got a law firm for her birthday to the part-timers working in your M1 store. There are many personalities, from tomboy sluts to staunch Christian virgins. Not all talk about bags or other bitches, although most would have at one point discussed about why Singaporean men are so soft and whiny. Actually, both my male and female Malaysian colleagues asked me the same question the other week.

- Yet let's not get into that, I do not wish to pursue the traits of the male Singaporean sheltered in an environment safer then our neighboring countries, because of the same reason why Singaporean men think Singaporean women suck: The bad stuff always sticks. It is our innate survival instincts that negative associations will have a stronger presence then positive ones. i.e. If it is bad, don't go there again because you will die. If you don't die, you can live another day to go to your happy place. Makes sense?

- Therefore if you're a jobless skater boy who's meeting a banker Ah Lian continuously talking about her brands, run. Run to your jobless surfer girl, but don't cry about how all Singaporean women are Ah Lians.

The reality is that our political, social and economical structure has a part to play in the disgruntled view local men have of local women.

- Singapore placed an emphasis on the human workforce from since independence because that was all we had. No natural resources, only a good location and the people. The formula isn't that hard to understand. After a while, households with both parents working were a common place, unlike just 20 years before 1970 when it was unheard of.

The economy grew, children grew, education levels grew, boys and girls were expected to work because our standard of living grew. To sustain, it is no longer taboo or shameful to ask your wife to work instead of tending the house and kids, it is actually expected. It may have even come to a point where women who are housewives are deemed less capable then their working mother counterparts. Thus, two scenarios may explain local women's attitudes:

1) If a woman left her career to tend to the house, what if her husband leaves her? Having been unemployed for many years, she would not be able to acquire a job easily. She would also find it hard to get a new husband, and she would still have to worry about the future of her children (if any). Most women have biological expiry dates at 40, men's lives more often then not start at 40. Therefore, when a woman marries, she better be sure that the husband is able to support her financially and emotionally. And if he decides to leave her for a 20 year old China girl he met in a Shenzhen spa, he better has enough assets during the divorce to ensure that the children are well taken care of. In the case of no kids, then that's your severance package ladies, to prep you on your way of possibly finding companionship again after your esteem has been stripped and spat on.

2) In most cases, both husband and wife would continue working to maintain a semblance of a reasonable lifestyle. So if I am expected to work, why can't I expect you to work too? That is why local women emphasize on the employment status of their future partners. For a working woman who had put in effort, she simply won't find a guy who doesn't want to put in equal effort appealing. There are many reasons why one cannot find employment, more often then not it would be more of an excuse then a reason. Currently, we are facing a labour shortage in the not-so-atas jobs. I don't see why it would be demeaning for a degree holder to be a server, especially when you need the cash because many things in Singapore are not adequately subsidized. Therefore, one can be right when one says that local women appear more like a man, it is because someone has to be.

Come to think of it, I think it applies to all women's attitudes.

At the end of the day, women and men are different. Women are creatures of nature, child bearing, emotional, nurturing, inspiring. Men are practical, protective, sheltering, strong. It is an extremely cohesive combination if no discrimination is present, the perfect plan to role model survival in our current world. Yet, the dynamics of social roles are changing, there are more cases of strong, sheltering men tending to the house and kids full time, and their nurturing, inspiring other halves focusing on their career because they have a better pay package. Both are comfortable with their roles, and most importantly both understand each other.

If you are unable to find anyone suitable, I doubt the geographic location is the problem. Be patient, and let time play cupid. Race, religion and nationality do affect the prospect of marriage, but if your personalities gel, nothing should get in the way. If these social standings are the reasons behind an unsuccessful proposal, then the relationship is simply not strong enough to climb over the great wall of parental and social disapproval. It'll end up in the shits anyway even if both marry without ironing the issues.

Whichever the case may be, the key would be understanding the relationship you got yourself into. Do not blame the short cocks and big pussies of the world, look into yourself as a representative of your gender and see if you think you'd personally make a good partner to your idealisation of a husband or wife. You'd come to realise that your perfect idea of a life partner is hardly in existence, and if it is it will bore you eventually. After 5 years of continuous sex with Scarlet Johanson, you'll start leering at the coffeeshop auntie.

Well, either that or your perfect partner will kapok all your CPF money and leave you hanging with a viagra erection.

The no-smoking path

Ban people from doing so while walking but also enforce such a regulation

I refer to the report “Govt exploring extension of smoking ban in public places” (Oct 13), an action which is long overdue.

The perils of smoking and second-hand smoke are well known; the World Health Organization calls tobacco use the biggest health hazard that nations face.

The Government should not only ban people from smoking while they are walking but also have tight enforcement to ensure against disregard for such a regulation.

It is imperative the Government takes a multi-pronged approach on smoking. This should include banning the sale of tobacco products to those born in or after the year 2000 so that smoking will eventually be eradicated here.

New licences for the sale of tobacco products should not be issued, while the nationwide NTUC FairPrice supermarket chain could take the lead to cease the sale of tobacco products as part of its ethos to promote social and corporate responsibility.

Of course, it would be better to revoke current licences and have designated smoking centres to stop people from lighting up indiscriminately.

Medical subsidies should not be given to smokers for hospitalisation in public hospitals and for polyclinic visits. They ought to pay the full cost for the harm and suffering they inflict upon others.

I would even suggest not giving work permits, employment passes, permanent residency or citizenship to those who smoke.

Meanwhile, the Workplace Health and Safety Act should make it an employer’s duty to provide segregated offices for smokers and non-smokers to minimise non-smokers’ exposure to the odour and by-products such as tar in smokers’ breath and on their person.

There should be stiffer sanctions against those who flout the smoking ban and more enforcement officers island-wide.

I hope the Government will have the political will to implement such measures, for the taxes collected on tobacco simply do not outweigh the medical/health costs associated with smoking.

Stamping out tobacco use in Singapore will benefit the majority of the non-smoking population. If a country like Bhutan can ban the sale of tobacco products, I cannot see why we cannot do the same to promote health and happiness in our nation.

Even if the policies are bitter medicine to some, the government of the day must have the moral courage to do what is right.

No-smoking path is Utopian

I refer to Ms Coral Ang’s letter “The no-smoking path” (Oct 17), is Utopian. A total ban on tobacco is overly aggressive; a line must be drawn such that the extent of government intervention is in the interest of the entire nation and not just the ideals of non-smokers.

I am not a smoker, but I know what smoking means to some people, locals and tourists, and that smoking requires regulation, not an outright ban.

Firstly, smoking has a symbolic meaning to people. It is one thing to ban chewing gum, but to ban smoking is to ban what were once called “freedom torches” in the United States, where women were initially banned from smoking in public. Smoking was a “way out” for people in war or poverty. Regardless of whether or not it is pointless, smoking holds a certain meaning to people worldwide. Banning it would make Singapore seem more authoritarian than it already is.

Smoking has health implications, but so does alcohol, certain medicines, obesity, lack of exercise and lack of hygiene. We cannot allow medical subsidies to be denied to smokers for two reasons.

First, to be fair, as there are those who damage their bodies through other means: Alcohol drinkers, the obese, even athletes who injure themselves through over-zealous training could be considered as people who irresponsibly damage their bodies.

Second, and more importantly, we must be humane. A smoker can learn to quit, and not all of his health problems may be caused by smoking. If subsidies are to be denied to smokers, it should be so for over-eaters and alcohol drinkers as well.

Finally, workplace segregation is a non-starter. If you dislike a smoker’s breath, ask him to eat a mint or be more responsible for his image and the office environment. Tar and other by-products do not spread like viruses.

If employers and colleagues are concerned about smoking, they should educate and advise smokers to quit, but never judge them for being smokers.

Singapore is a modern, capitalist and democratic state, while Bhutan is a spiritual country. Should such a serious smoking ban be considered here, we should have a referendum.

Yes, smoking is harmful but so are many other human actions. If we listen to Ms Ang, we might as well ban personal cars for contributing to global warming.

Giving up on local hard copy news after reading much online, I reserve the occasional interactions with the papers when I'm atop my porcelain throne. There's something about the scent of ink on fiber and fingers that I quite miss, and during yesterday's session, I saw how Straits Times now print Chinese names. Chi-Ling Lin. The Japanese, who followed the same last name/first name system, had long ago kena. Now it's time to bastardise the other Asian names.

We also understand that if you write an English name, Bubbletea Lin, we would still know Lin is her sirname.

Are the papers saying that Asians are getting so westernized that we would not be able to tell the difference in Asian names?

Are the papers trying to be more reader friendly to our western counterparts?

Are the papers wanting to strictly adhere to English being English therefore they should follow English formats?

Regardless of what perfume coated turdish reasons, I hope SPH would create English papers for Asians and stop trying to be American papers. And god forbid this be the start of Americanising our English.

If you were to ever read up on articles about the social and political landscape in Singapore, I would suggest you avoid clicking on comments. It is as tempting as eating the 4th bowl of soup kambing, and you will find yourself rather unpleasantly bloated at the non-objective views lettered with emotional outbursts of F U _P A P S U X. I now understand why there are very few critical articles justifying the ruling party's existence. It could be that there are not many ways to justify them; and it could also be that by doing so, it is the equivalent of wearing a bunny suit during rabbit season.

How this conclusion came about was through the reactions toward the recent wikileaks incident. In all honesty, it felt like the political version of Us Weekly. If Yacoob's wife is secretly Singapore's Mdm Heidi, that would be controversial. And to feel liberated, do we need to see in print that Straits Times journalists do not have literary freedom? Seriously, that is as obvious as Tony Tan's allegiance.

The drum roll came upon one controversial cable involving the venomous religion statement. In Lee Kuan Yew's defense, it is not unbelievable that he was quoted out of context. Is it saying that we should use and abuse our lesser privileged neighbours like cattle? The foreign workers that pave our roads did not come here to shove us on the train or steal our HDBs, and they should be given due respect rather then be treated like asses dispensed at will. These voters are probably comfortable with continued PAP rule and would consider voting for the PAP again should policies change.

Questions are constantly asked on whether an increasing number of Singaporeans are getting complacent. Wait, I don't think complacency is the word I'm looking for, it may apply to some but I certainly know more hardworking people then I know slackers. It might be part due to the fact that I do not like to mix with unmotivated finger pointing whiny people. Ohhh that is the word I was looking for, whiny.

Let me thus rephrase my pathetic ramble of an introduction and succinctly replace it with:

"Are you one of them whiny Singaporeans?"

The following may be familiar to some as I believe we had encountered it at some point of our lives. The complaint about the inadequate attention Singaporeans are giving to their talent. The local system oppresses creativity and the citizens do little to provide support, this leaves them with no choice but to pack up their bags of genius in a bottle and move to foreign lands.

I agree with that statement, our education system is getting too stifling. Teaching algebra to 12 year olds in preparation for secondary education may improve intellectual calculations but they could also result in a retardation of certain areas in child development, specifically the experience of what used to be commonly known, up to the late 20th century, as a "childhood". Thus, there may be truth that growth for un-mechanical creativity is suppressed.

In the second point of Singaporeans not supporting other Singaporeans, this is commonly seen in the talent industries of music and drama. I wish to extract prior research proving the lack of support, but because I tire from the already endless research I have to do for my Psych and Marketing majors, I shall instead provide you with a link from a reputable local forum, Sammyboy.com. A thread had started featuring images of a very healthy attendance during 2010's YOG concert events featuring local artists, but this turnout proved only to be for the opening and closing games. I have employees in my current establishment that works 9 hour days, 6 days a week. Thus far, I am not able to convince the head to release a better schedule for the employees. But that does not mean I will stop trying.

Now, we have this certain madam, a teacher, let me say that again capital emphasis, A TEACHER, write in against mandatory rest days for domestic helpers.

First, if you are not able to toggle your service and your family, quit. If it is not as easy on your pockets, downgrade. Why fight against the age old evolutionary process of having the breeder instinctively tend to their offspring unless one wishes to change the nature-nuture system? In other words, why did you deliberately unsafely fuck in the first place?

Second, a busy schedule does not justify why a government should consider improving your quality of life by compromising another's. Do not blame the helper, blame your employer for ruining your work life balance.

Again, I shall take time off to highlight a topic that makes most urban women boil, setting up an obedient wive's club in Singapore. They have it in Malaysia? Well, I won't be suprised because it is Malaysia, a majority muslim nation that does not hide the fact that they favor their own race and religion. But these 3 muslims in Singapore want to follow suit? Are they politically inapt? Insensitive? Insane?

They may argue are that their religion encourages women to be the ideal wife by supporting their husband, after all this is the foundation of a good marriage. Yes, they may also argue that it isn't literally obedience per say the club wishes to encompass, but rather it the education of how a unified marriage can be developed. Love your husband, push him forward to greater heights. Love your husband more, give him mind fucking sex so that he may curb his temptation to frolic with other ketupats.

Nooooooo... it's not about discrimination. It's not about women giving dead fish sex therefore husbands have no choice but to fuck another hole (so poor thing right, these men). And no lah, it's not that we want our women to stay at home and suck on husbandry cocks after they wash the dishes and tuck in the children. These are not issues my friends, these are simply daily foundations of a happy marriage.

A cut in a person's salary, be it a one thousand or one million, would result in demotivation.

Your ministers are already paid a ridiculous amount increasing, I dare add, increasing over the years, and now to appease your people you have to cut their salaries. To cut their salaries would mean we would have some disgruntled individuals serving on the cabinet. Do you really think they are in it because of the goodness of their own heart?

In the beginning, you created this big black whirlpool of greed by issuing fat pensions and greasy bonuses. If their fat pensions and greasy bonuses are retained and issued even when they have underperformed obnoxiously, won't your ministers be encouraged to work for the money because the results are materialized in the form of cold hard cash?

This is a lose lose situation. Cut their pay, they not happy. Don't cut their pay, we not happy.

I know I can't change the past, but the pay scales shouldn't have escalated during times when your people are tightening their belts. Yet, failing to see such economics still entitled you bonuses of 8 months?

Let us move forward. Might I suggest you re-direct a healthy percentage of their salaries to a charitable body, in which they can oversee or maintain, like their pet project. Could be a new body. Could be an existing body. Just a body that would make the lives of your lower income folks better.

Idealistic? I think so too. But it's time they do the prostituting instead of the pimping.

No, The Maid Did Not Ask For It

When the headlines of the maid found dead in the water tank (18/5 updated story here), there have more backlash on our foreign friends. It's understandable the first reaction of any local would be that of disgust, in the act itself and at the thought of drinking the water. But one FB friend declared that all these foreigners are poisoning not only our waters but our society, and they should be sent back immediately.

These are the points I would like to bring up over this murder and over our foreign friends.

1) A life has been vanquished. By your reaction of such uncalled for spite over all foreigners only reflects that the society you wish not to be tarnished is already dirty.

2) These same foreigners build our roads and clean our houses. Unless you want to pay western prices of hiring an in-house helper, be careful what you ask for.

3) White collar workers are co-extisting happily in our system. Sometimes we hate them, sometimes we drink with them, sometimes we sleep we them. With these times, we have learnt not to stereotype any longer, and we can leave it to the bengs to beat up at the snooty ones who think they're in Patpong.

4) Nearly all Ang Mohs are on local contracts. And the flashy ones with all talk and no balls are more often then not kicked out without preferential treatment. Bye Bye expat package. Ha Ha.

5) I have many Malaysian friends, they work very well, and I have many Indon Chinese friends, they also work very well. I have problems with the Singaporeans, who wants to work as Junior Graphic Designers for $2000.

6) When I publish for entry level positions in my company, I only have 1 Singaporean application out of 20 Filipino and PRC applications. Thus, I'm very shorthanded. I'm still looking, please send me an email all you locals who want to work.

So let us all take a step back and understand this issue on a very logical level. For the high fiber digestibility of the general population, let's have it in point form again.

1) Remember when the Ang Mohs 'colonised' us again in the late 90s with their ridiculous expat packages. Do we complain? Yes. Do we put up with it? Most of the times, yes. Why? Because they give me big fat tips.

2) Remember when their expat packages burst and they worked on the same grounds we do? We all laughed with each other and many became our indispensable friends.

3) Then we have our Malaysian friends, we always treated the ones who can't speak English rather tardily. But they did not step on our toes and they make the effort to get along with us.

4) The Indon-Chinese were always part of our system. They seem to gel very well, mainly because they came here on long, long holidays and rather then work.

5) Our domestic helpers and foreign construction workers mostly kept to their Lucky Plazas and Little Indias. Hey, everyone deserves a break you know.

Then came the huge influx of the current foreign talent and our bitterness exploded like a Gremlins in a microwave. Here's another batch of point forms.

1) They allow employers to work them longer and cheaper, thus pushing out aging, lower income folks who needed the money just to eat day to day.

2) They can be very rude.

3) They don't speak our language, they expect us to speak theirs.

4) They can be very rude.

5) We feel invaded because it happened all too fast too soon.

6) The young ones invited to study here are obnoxious, and they tend to stay in their clicks.

7) They can be very rude.

Everything in these point forms can be summarised in one sentence: You do not come into our home, spit on our floor and tell us how to redecorate.

We have happily co-existed with foreigners for many years, they try to understand us and we in turn find their company rather eclectic, no matter the colour. My French friend messaged me how he was delighted to be able to pay his income tax, better contributing to Singapore then to France! So cute right?

I have always liked that our city is a good mix of all nationalities, and as a growing nation we have to stop stereotyping the mass and start isolating problem. And the problem is as simple as our having no quality control. To counter labour issues, low birth rate problems, and GDP growth, we flooded our market with all sorts of fishes.

Of course your citizens won't be happy lah! And what do they do? Come up with downright disgusting statements like "The maid deserves it." or "Why can't she be be killed elsewhere?".

I had always suspected that Ronald's marriage to that ping pong girl reeks of a Dick and Jacintha. When the Dick and Jacintha engagement was announced, my favorite rumor was the one where Dick needed to be married to claim an inheritance. When the Ronald and ping pong girl engagement was announced, my theory was that Teo Chee Hean wanted to use the two newly secured investments as breeding stock, like how China got Yao Ming after many basketball copulations. I am speculating here, so yes, there are no links or articles to support my conspiracy theories. What I gathered from the fields of the internet was instead a possibility that Ronald and Jia Wei really dug each other, or Ronald could have really been into Jia Wei, and that Lim Swee Say likes to cry.

That was the past. At present, everyone has moved on. Teo and Lim secured their MP posts, and Ronald and Widi are husband and wife. They were dating for a year already, and the proposal to marry wasn't a case of the shotgun. Trust me, Widi's belly remained petite.

What Has Been Learnt From GE2011, I Wouldn't Trade It For A Kate Spade Endorsment

In the wake of my political understanding, admittedly limited still, I can't help but feel that apathy is an easier emotion to handle. With nonchalance comes no disappointment. No conviction, no arguments. Is ignorance truly a bliss worth sacrificing knowledge? I am in no position to argue that. Simply because I had behaved like a brat who couldn't get what she wanted when the one thing I pinned passionate hopes on did not come true.

The opposition members, after years of fighting, managed to increase their numbers to 6. From my point of view, it is a maddeningly small figure compared to the 81 seats the ruling party attained. It is maddening still that this transpired despite an the overall percentage of 60/40. Yes, I had wanted a freak election of about 15 seats, can? I wasn't even expecting 50. But 6, in my opinion, seemed oppressive.

As I cooled off the previous 2 days, I realised I had to be more mature. It was a good fight. It was an exhilarating fight. It was a historical fight. Truth be told, I was a ruling party supporter the past 2 elections for 2 reasons. One, the opposition were seriously below par. Two, the ruling party gave me a big fat carrot that amounted to 30% of my then salary. Three, like how I can't be bothered to count, I couldn't be bothered with Singapore. Oh oh, and I could walked the streets safely and go home alone even when I'm drunk.

What changed? This year, the opposition can actually string factual sentences. This time, I don't earn minimum wage. And I realised the internet isn't only for pron. (Yes, I can still walk the streets safely and go home alone even when I'm drunk. Am very grateful for that.)

Surfing around articles, comments and tweets, I especially liked these 2 that Mr Brown linked: NST on PAP and Her Royal Highness Catherine Lim on GE11. It taught me to see things on a greater context, not just in numbers.

Elsewhere, an Aussie mate validated that a freak result would only result in upheaval, baby steps are the way to go.

A first time voter also related how delighted she was to be able to exercise her democracy, absorbing both sides of the arguments before coming to her decision.

On the topic of mudslinging, I cannot resist not sharing with you how one of my girlfriends criticized voters for being blind not to consider that Low Thia Khiang might use his political standing to boost his business, and that as a new minister he shouldn't be stepping on two boats. I did not correct her on Ah Khiang being a new minister, neither did I question her assumptions. Instead, I sent her a link to a 2002 article on other examples of ministers' connections to their businesses.

And we all know this infamous Facebook status making it's rounds.

Opposition supporters are far from exempted from ridiculing themselves as well. A buddy of mine related the story of how he overheard a son telling his mother that he's not concerned about the bread and butter issues the team brought up, he's only interested in overthrowing a dictatorship. A dictatorship? Seriously?

There are ways you can justify your support, so be smart, because the followers reflect on the leader.

So... will the ruling party be kinky enough and swallow Potong Pasir? Will the opposition ride away in a hot air balloon? Will Lui Tuck Yew try to ban the interwebs? We cannot say for certain. What we can do is to sit back and enjoy one important thing: We, the people on Facebook, Twitter and blogs, did not get thrown in jail by the Old Man for criticizing political issues. An Open Letter To Our Foreign And PR Friends

Dear Friends,

I have the privilege of working with you, and you have proven your talents are indeed not to be underestimated. You have given me joy and laughter at work and play. For that, I thank you.

Therefore, I shall truthfully address your questions on the strange people that are Singaporeans.

(Well, some, not all. I dare not speak for all.)

You ask why we are ungrateful to be living in a country that is safe.

You ask why we are constantly complaining when we are comparatively better off then most.

You ask why we are now questioning our government when they are uncorrupted.

We have been living safe and sheltered, but restless and lost.

We have been seeing foreign friends come in and work, and retire happily to their hometown.

We have been keeping quiet too long, because behind our nonchalant fronts we are afraid.

I have heard enough lectures on how we are ungrateful, uncompassionate, and mindless.

I have heard George Yeo's emphatic address on FB to young Singaporeans yesterday, and I believe him. He is a minister that has the tenacity to evolve, one who has shown that the people, not his paycheck, are his priority. Yet, in the grand scheme of things that is the political game, Georgie boy may have became a pawn in PAP's move.

Hsien Loong, better understanding where the pitchforks are pointed, has also shown humility yesterday.

Wouldn't it be ideal if the causalities of elections are limited to retards? What if we can individually pick what goes into the rojak? It was on this topic that the other half asked me to google up the the idea of a coalition government. He also pointed out that I should credit him for it, but he doesn't want to be mentioned. Right...

A coalition government is an idealistic multi-party system which eliminates the possibility of a one sided majority vote (UK had started on their coalition last year, and it's still in its infancy stage). This is the rojak that Lim Swee Say was mentioning, and this is also the system Old Man Lee instilled in his ministers not to consider.

Give it some thought though, a coalition means we can possibly retain the brightest minds with the most passionate views. We would have a combination of well calculated economic proposals and spine it with a backbone of cultural development. Policies will go through rigorous scrutinizing before they are implemented. There will not be a stone unturned or a page unflipped. Such diversity in a government will ensure that all perspectives are covered. Additionally, if we focus on a single member system, we can stress on individual merits rather then the take it or leave it bundle packages.

Yet, we must also understand that this is an idealistic view based on the trust that everyone will compromise and work toward one goal. Unfortunately, it is not always the case. Parliamentary bullying may take place, it can likely be that a minority will seek to be in favour of stronger parties just to secure their positions. A mix of individuals with different agendas on how to cook the broth can result in repeated votes of no confidence. A coalition of minds can result in arduous arguments, resulting in ridiculous delays longer then polyclinic queues. By the time it's your turn you're already vomiting blood. And the greatest barf with a system based on the consensus of many individuals, there will be little accountability should a policy fail. Where would the finger point and whose finger do you use? With the fallibility in humans, this can be a difficult balance indeed. Julian Glover wrote in The Gaurdian, "A government without a common purpose will soon find itself no government at all.".

A coalition may be too sudden a change for our young political system, let us then revert to our current mandate. Even if we stick to a one party system and fill parliament with an opposition majority, who is to guarantee that the opposition would not transform itself into the next ruling party?

Unfortunately Lui Tuk Yew's description of PAP's trees protecting our Singapore village sounds as bad as his name. Alright let's not get biased, let's provide the benefit of a doubt. Labeling an analogy as good or bad really is relative. My personal views on what sounds awful may actually be relevant to others. How about other examples of bad analogies, extracted from 25 funniest analogies:

Back to Mr Lui and his anti-fungi movement. It's a scientific fact that mushrooms will not necessarily poison or destroy the eco system (Fungi, good guys or bad guys - ANBG) and bring down the tall, tall, overshadowing trees. On the contrary, mushrooms are essential to the eco system, playing a vital role in decomposition of organic materials and continuing the cycle of nutrients (Introduction to Fungi) that would be supplied to plants and, yes, them big trees surrounding the village. Them big trees blocking our horizon. And the little people tending to them big trees. But let's not get too bitchy.

My friends had a field day throwing his analogy back at him. The best by far was:

One saving grace in Mr Lui's speech was when he reaffirmed that the co-drivers of the bus are us, the people. Yet I find his conviction hard to believe not only because of his asking-for-trouble analogy, but also because of the tendency ministers have in riding on Hsien Loong's speeches.

The other saving grace that prevented PAP from further embarrassing themselves was Yaacob Ibrahim's eloquent demeanor. Yes, he may have proposed some silly ideas here and there, angered some folks here and there, but he was comfortable to watch and, I dare add, sincere in his beliefs of steering Kallang-Moulmein with the residents. Pushing on the idea of thinking long term and exemplifying it with his efforts in changing a big longkang into a big and clean longkang, there were substance in how this veteran of speeches and elections eased into an one on one connection with the voters.

I hope sewage enhancements won't be the only proposal PAP has to show-and-tell in their plan to scoop back their credibility. Aside from one or two good speakers, the rest are rather rotten. But it's common knowledge that it always had been in their strategy to make us buy the whole basket of eggs, or else.

Eh... What's my conclusion... Oh yes. I like some PAP ministers, even silly Vivian before he turned to the dark side. But I, along with many other of my mates, cannot see justification in purchasing 4 rotten eggs for 1 good one.

I have read a note on FB that my friend had started, resulting in a thread of very interesting propositions. Simply put, are we voting with our emotions and go with what feels right or are we dissecting with our brains the feasibility on all the manifestos. Do we push for more opposition voices in parliament simply to add the numbers or shouldn't we afford the vote on the individual's merit, PAP or otherwise?

Finally! A truly objective view coupled with suggestions on the weaknesses of the key issues proposed, and constructive suggestions on how it can be done otherwise. The call for PAP's blood is so overwhelming it drowns out alternative thinking (how ironic). Which I don't really blame the people for, after all they were the ones who justified new candidates MG Kiam Pah Face and ^_^v . But hey, everyone makes mistakes eh, even $16,000 ones.

For years, when asked my views on the political system in Singapore, I would say I really don't have an opinion. Not because I couldn't care less. OK I lied. I really couldn't care less. Why? Because I believed throwing my voice into the sea would only result in having whitewash drown me. It's like traveling miles to an ulu beach on the promises of catching awesome waves only to realise upon arriving that it's all whitewash. What can I do next but put aside the surf board and settle for skimming on the banks? I can't pull down the moon now, can I?

My educational and familial system has trained me as such: Why you ask for more? Why you have so many things to say? As I had mentioned briefly before, our growth and our ideals are based on what we were fed and what we were taught (or punished on rather). The debate on whether SG youths are over reliant had started since a decade ago, brought up by Goh Chok Tong in '01. In retrospect, I do not find it suprising that we... oh fine... that youths are pampered. If you have, for years, herded your citizens to be productive sheep, they will in turn tell their kids not to think outside the box (the foreign helper can carry it). This is the Singapore dream, so just eat your grass and don't complain so much can? Also cannot. Because even androids dream of electric sheep.

Thus, I decided to stay on neutral grounds, preferring the fair play of hearing all sides on any story before casting comments. Ironically, staying diplomatic and neutral is worse because you'll get fired from both sides. What's more, I was called a mindless individual who only flowed along with the majority, the audacity! Allow me to say it in caps. THE AUDACITY! My pro-opposition mates gave me shit for not making a change, and my pro-PAP mates gave me flak for rocking the boat.

Let me then describe my position on neutrality in text. This question proposed to WP's Yaw Shin Leong best describe where I stand: "Why rock the boat?"

I liked how he concluded:

"I will not be giving you a direct answer for you to rock the boat, so that you vote for opposition. This is because the discernment really has to come from within you :)"

I especially liked the smiley face.

I had also gathered that another reason to rock the boat can be summed up as providing the support to opposition voices so that their presence in parliament would not be suppressed by the ruling party. PAP needs to know that Singaporeans are not happy (SGPolitics.net).

Whatever reasons anyone bring to the table, you can form your own opinions and make your own decisions, and there are many more open and valid perspectives available now. As Visa (yes I'm ripping him off again) had pointed out:

"Social media- Twitter and Facebook- give each individual greater leverage than ever before. Powerful ideas are harder to suppress than ever." (The Duties That Accompany Change 27.4.11)

That, ladies and gentlemen, was the turning point in this election, when accumulative voices were no longer suppressed. After their voices were published, the working folks realised ISD did not chongkong their HDB flats and throw them in jail. A growing number of younger generations, fed up with being labeled as teddy bears with stuffings for brains, took up the ministers' calls to be pro-active. The opposition got their strengths together, fueled by a growing encouragement. And the ruling party finally realised their parang was blunt.

I think it's time to paddle out now, and it's bloody easier then pulling down the moon.

I came across this young chap's blog and I must say I am very impressed with his writing (yes, where have I been). His link floated around FB and I fished it up like an old boot. Granted, there are many who write well, but many times the over intellectualizing seemed to be the equivalent of buying an SLS to add penile inches. At the end of the day, take away the car and take off the pants and you end up with the same stub of a dick.

There are the few that write well, that write smart, and within their grammatically perfect sentences lie a fluency of words that stream comfortably down. Those chosen words when pieced together distinctively create a personality reflectively separate from the creator, in other words they breathe their own life. Too dramatic? I don't know how else to describe it see, because the words that are written on this page and the personalitIES created are just fuck duck mucks.

Take Yumei for example, whose words narrate themselves with precision (they speak to me in Jane Austen's voice). Dr Loh, the street smart doc that can take on House. And Chef don't-fuck-around-with-my-time Avril. Writing a book is one thing, but journal entries are another art form altogether.

Quite fascinated and amused that two people can come to decisions amicably. Have I been missing something in my previous life?

I had never experienced a frank conversation on building a future with another human being, building a home, and the greatest milestone, a family, without being either embarrassed or reprimanded. It's surreal to be able to talk openly these dreams when in my previous life I would have been not only ridiculed for my preference in interior decoration, but also slammed for my idealism. Then I realised, heyyyy I could get out of it by saying it's all a big April's Fool's joke! But I decided I'll stick to my annual April Fool pink blog stint rather then go against staying dry.

At the end of the 6 mths I'm going to collect my pool of moneys bet against me. Yay.

I too wish to post up many, many, many recesses, but I have maturely accepted that these would be best shared in person. Elections are here again. Conversations with some people provided many views and I listened to the objective ones, the ones with calm heads that took into consideration both sides of the coin.

Do you know that there are still news of China torturing political prisoners? Super powers with backward mentalities, what a combination. Makes our old man's ruling look like the land of Rainbow Brite. On the other hand, we have our own little backward practices, like editing letters submitted to our national paper too liberally. So humiliating to leak this on the internets. Which I did anyways.

I have come to the conclusion that our nation is an MNC, to which another added it's a Chinese company, that works it's workers to death. We work our workers to death because our workers are our only resource.

I am thankful I'm not living in an incest and rape ridden country. But I also know that our government can do better to boost the morale of this MNC, that is why they are paid highly to find a solution. We are products of our leaders, our teachers, our parents, if we are lazy and whiny, you made us so.

To the people who insistently condemn PAP for ruining your life like how you condemn your parents for not being rich, you blokes would be happier in other countries and remain adamant that the suffering you receive is worth leaving Singapore. That is if other countries would want you.

To the people who are think our local shores is the greatest nation in the world, stop living out 9th August 1965. Soils have eroded, euphoria has faded, and our leaders have changed. Like a prata in the greasy wind.

To the young folks, grow some balls lah.

To the opposition, if you can prove that you have sound yet radical ideas that can bring a better balance between freedom and oppression, you have my vote. If all you do is play one broken record on how PAP sucks, you don't have my vote.

Being an MNC is not only about profits and reserves, it's about EQ. If you have the right management that can boost the morale of your company and bring your people together, the right management that stop treating your workers like Pandas in a zoo, one that involves your workers instead of hitting them on the knuckles, and isn't afraid to admit that mistakes are made, I believe you'll have a higher percentage of folks who will stop bugging you about why your ministers get paid higher then the average rich people but lower then the average evil giant corporation president. This is one management that runs with the right motives.

1357 Parked at a cafe, canteen like cafe. How did I decide which one? Oooh they have beer. 2.50 a can of Bintang on inflated airport prices is still heaven. That'll keep me occupied, since I'm neurotic enough to have head conversations. This is what I can also call a holiday, when you have to kill time with beer and only your own company. China tourist guide doing a head count outside: Deng Xiao Hui, check. Ang moh with his local gf who's pissed off him. French family on the next table whose kid ordered Gado Gado. Now its back to Catch-22. Alamak I need another beer. 3 hrs to go. Battery life 91%.

1458 Alamak time flies. I could check in and slack in the departure lounge, but I know the beers are double the price. How? Yes, you're right, beer no. 3 would seem a likely choice since it'll accompany me for another half hr. 330 seems a good time to check in considering boarding is at 5. I can douse myself with water during. I wonder if beer fart would endanger the air pressure on board....

Happy Valentine's my lovelies!

It's not about the flowers, triple priced from other days, it's the gesture behind the flowers. Flowers from the market without wrapping, and just bunched up in papers or a string. So garden like, those flowers, and those flowers I love. Simple, natural, beauty in it's element. Girls need not always have $500 bouquets with tons of cellophane. If they do, then you've hooked yourself a very high maintenance horse.

So say Valentines can be everyday other then in specificity today, then where are the random flowers and gifts given on random days?

Enough about flowers, it's not about triple priced flowers that will wither in 2 days for 1 priceless moment of pleasure, it's, as I'll quote Ripper:

Wise words from the man that wanted to buy me triple priced flowers, but his florist couldn't take his orders due to an overly high demand of flora requests. It is indeed a thought that counts heavily, thank you sweetie.

No, it's not one of those blogs that whimsically vents about Singapore. And I find her description of the arts scene on our island very succinct:

Beauty or brains, it's a classic toss recited constantly for the longest of time and possessing either would be sufficient in eking out a relatively comfortable way of life. There isn't a point denying the fact that we're not biased to attractive physiques. Or that intellects can dumbfound you with their knowledge (academia or street wise). When you're pretty, you're lazy to be smart because you know how to manipulate it. When you're smart, you don't have to be pretty because you devise your way.

So here's food for thought, what if it's no longer viable to possess only one? There is a growing breed of people who start off as intellects and gradually discovered the advantages of some effortless grooming. Judging from the number of family shoots I have arranged, there is a noticeably higher number of young people with MDs and PhDs who possess flawless skin and structured bones. A degree in our society has dwindled down to the value of... of... a needle... in a haystack... of needles? Moving on, what would our future be like?

Since you have asked my opinion, this is my speculation:

Plastic surgery goes up. Groom your children to be plastic surgeons and buy stocks from companies producing silicon.

Degrees, double degrees, masters, double masters, they will become the norm. PhDs and MDs holds it's ground until the time someone proposes the idea of expecting Nobel prizes in one's resume as an ideal requirement.

The third world joins in the fun and get their education system pumped up. Where once they were the primary source of manual labour, now they are spewing out paper pushers.

No honors student wants to drill holes on the tarmac for a living, no degree holder wants to clear out the rubbish. With the very gradual demise of physically skilled worker ants, and the increased supply of office drones, manual labour takes a salary jump and academic work suffers a blow. The construction worker starts receiving Amex card applications and the banker remains a wanker.

This is where it forks. Either:

Buildings are much costlier to build, so less buildings are made. Our skyline takes a breather and our planet is less congested with concrete. Education saves the world. And ruins something else (which I'm too lazy to theorise) in this equation.

Or realistically:

The majority takes up apprenticeship for labored jobs creating another flooded market. And the cycle repeats itself.

Regardless of what the future might hold, or how many psychological issues arise from a constantly demanding society, or why pubic hair can grey, here's a heads up in the now: be a beautiful intellect and
shine out before beautiful intellects become the norm. NOW. If you're smart, research in presentation. If you're pretty, read, read, read, and read some more. If you're neither, don't worry, you have a wonderful personality.

Religious conflicts and genocide have been happening since the dawn of time.

After a number of years hearing about various wars and reading about modern day genocides, I'm quite amused by the fact that when a plane bombed itself onto a developed country's iconic building, the war against terrorism ensued with much fan fare. Coverage of the Bosnian Serb army and their ethnic cleansing of Muslims didn't receive much campaign propaganda. And who stood up for the Tutsis? The UN is a long story.

Where once terrorism was a generic term not restricted to a class of people, it has developed unofficially to refer to Muslims because somebody moved America's impenetrable fatty cheese. Now, America has curdled into a big ball of debt and paranoia, or they just want an excuse to touch people in the airports. Seriously folks, I don't think the brains behind the Jihads would use the same trick twice, you're covering your balls but your ass is open for business.

The large difference between the 9/11 atrocity and the other far grotesque wars is what I would like to describe as Lady Gaga phenomena. Who's more famous gets more hits, pop culture of the masses fueling a dynamo of power, and what happens in the third world stays third wheel. Unless it can be a superb PR boost.

If Paris Hilton were to get Herpes, people in China would know about it half an hour later. But that 12 year old African girl undergoing genital mutilation done by a mid wife with just a blunt knife in the bush? Poor thing... so who did Paris sleep with this time?

I'm not ranting about this dismal world, neither am I giving a 'We Are The World" speech. I'm just amused at how easily humans in it's entire plurality can be manipulated. My view is not all Christians burn Qurans and not all Muslims go 'boom'. Not all priests are pedophiles and not all monks are penniless. And that there is always some form of good to balance out the ridiculous:
